ACCESS AIDS Care Receives Funding From Advocates For Youth

THE CENTER

Advocates For Youth Grant...support for the next generation.

As part of our efforts to create the first ever Hampton Roads LGBT center,ACCESS AIDS Care recently received funding from Advocates for Youth to address homophobia in our community. The effects of homophobia on our youth, particularly on teenagers, have been widely publicized nationally and our community is no different. The effects of hate, prejudice and bullying are widely felt among the next generation and the time to stop this trend is now.

Within the new LGBT Center and with the grant received from Advocates For Youth, ACCESS AIDS Care plans to create a safe space for youth to gather and discuss issues that impact their daily lives. One target population is African American youth, a population particularly affected by the continued transmision of HIV. We plan to implement an advisory board of youth and key stakeholders to guide the development of youth specific services and activities. A key objective of this project is to reach out to area schools with information about resources developed for LGBT youth.

The Advocates For Youth grant will allow ACCESS AIDS Care and our partners to bring much needed support to a population in need. It is the responsibility of our community to take steps to educate and empower the next generation and we hope you will join us in our mission to reach our youth.
