Please do not let the Supreme Court tilt further to the right.

CREDO Action | more than a network. a movement.
We need a progressive nominee.
Tell Democrats to fight
Your message to Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee:
Fight to for a progressive nominee to replace Justice Stevens on the Supreme Court. The court is heavily tilted to the right by ultra-conservative ideologues. If we don't fight for a progressive nominee to the Supreme Court, the court will become even more unbalanced and it will be generations before we can start to undo the damage.

The nomination battle to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens will affect our country for generations.
Unfortunately the conventional wisdom in Washington has been that the President ought to avoid a tough confirmation battle in the Senate and nominate a more moderate justice that can win support from the Republicans.
But we know that no matter whom President Obama nominates, the Republicans will throw a tantrum and declare the nominee ideologically unacceptable.
The stakes of this fight are too high to settle on a compromise candidate in the hopes of appeasing the unreasonable demands of the Republican minority.
President Bush (himself selected by a right-wing Supreme Court in one of the worst decisions in modern history) tilted the Supreme Court even more sharply to the right by appointing ultra-conservative ideologues. We have already paid a massive price with radical decisions providing for unlimited corporate spending on elections and blocking common sense limitations on gun ownership.
Justice Stevens has been the longtime leader of the liberal bloc of justices and his leadership helped forge majorities that counterbalanced the judicial radicalism of the right and upheld the rights of individuals, the dignity of each person, civil rights, women's rights and environmental stewardship.
We simply cannot afford to replace Justice Stevens with someone who will not or cannot be a formidable foe to reigning right-wingers on the court like Justices Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia.
President Obama will be meeting with the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee to solicit their advice about potential nominees and the nomination process itself. The Democrats in the Senate must make sure that President Obama knows they'll fight for a progressive nominee.
Time and time again, President Obama's advisors in the White House have urged him to make compromises in the pursuit of bipartisanship. Not this time. We can't allow centrists in the White House who are afraid of a fight to persuade President Obama to nominate someone who is sympathetic to George W. Bush's views of Presidential power or John Yoo's position on torture. We can't allow the threat of Republican outrage to pave the way for a nominee who's soft on protecting choice or accommodating to the most egregious excesses of K Street lobbyists or Wall Street banks.
Thank you for standing up for a more progressive Supreme Court.

P.S. Ezra Klein of the Washington Post put it best, saying: "President Obama could nominate the guy on the Quaker Oats box and Glenn Beck would find a way to connect him to Trotsky on his blackboard ('you know who else liked oatmeal!?')."
You and I both know it's true. Whomever President Obama nominates, there will be a fight. That's why it's so important for President Obama to resist the call for meaningless bipartisanship and instead be bold and nominate a candidate worth fighting for.
