Fox News?: Sensationalizes Anything Dealing With Transgender People

If you are a student of history, yellow journalism and the yellow press have been around since the late Nineteenth Century. Take a look at the definition. Yellow journalism, also known as the "Yellow Press", is a type of journalism that downplays legitimate news in favor of eye-catching headlines that sell more newspapers; sometimes, it deceives the audience it is intended for. It may feature exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, sensationalism, or unprofessional practices by news media organizations or journalists. Campbell (2001) defines Yellow Press newspapers as having daily multi-column front-page headlines covering a variety of topics, such as sports and scandal, using bold layouts (with large illustrations and perhaps color), heavy reliance on unnamed sources, and unabashed self-promotion. The term was extensively used to describe certain major New York City newspapers about 1900 as they battled for circulation. By extension the term is used today as a pejorative to decry any journalism that treats news in an unprofessional or unethical fashion, such as systematic political bias. Yellow journalism can also be the practice of over-dramatizing events. Frank Luther Mott (1941) defines yellow journalism in terms of five characteristics: scare headlines in huge print, often of minor news lavish use of pictures, or imaginary drawings use of faked interviews, misleading headlines, pseudo-science, and a parade of false learning from so-called experts emphasis on full-color Sunday supplements, usually with comic strips (which is now normal in the U.S.) dramatic sympathy with the "underdog" against the system. In the following case Fox so-called News takes a Transgender convict and portrays her as some sort of oddity rather than as a convicted felon in need of medical care. Fox so-called News always uses lavish, colorful pictures or video to drive home their opinion. Lets talk about pseudo-science (Being a Transgender person is a choice and can be cured with therapy.) Fox so-called News quotes self-proclaimed experts who in fact spew nothing more than misinformation and opinions. The following article focuses on a convicted murderer who happens to be a Transgender person also. If she were not a Transsexual, Fox would not even report this piece. If a male convict is suspected of having breast cancer, should not the convict have access to medical treatment? Of course, they should get whatever treatment is medically necessary. Would Fox News report it? Probably not. Last but not least, there are the "victims" in this story. The sheriff is the first "victim" and pseudo-expert. This guy is a real prize and of course an "expert" on criminal justice and Transgender health issues. Frequently, Fox so-called News makes its viewers "victims." In the following case, Fox wants the taxpayers to feel as if the evil department of correction's medical professionals is victimizing them. Let's assume, the doctors did not order a mammogram for this convict. The convict develops breast cancer. Now the Massachusetts Department of Corrections and Mass taxpayers are billed for chemotherapy, mastectomy and recovery. Big bucks! Fox so-called News reports only a portion of the facts. Just enough to catch their viewer's interest, raise their ratings and sell more advertising. In this case, we have a convicted felon who is Transsexual. She takes a regimen of hormones including estrogen. She now becomes a higher risk for breast cancer. What can be done about Fox so-called News? Nothing can be done except not to watch neither Fox so-called News nor any Fox programming and tell everyone you know why you do not watch Fox. Kosilek was convicted of murdering his wife and later sued in prison to change his name to Michelle Kosilek. Documents obtained by the TV station show that Kosilek was transported this week to a Boston hospital to receive a routine mammogram. Bristol County Sheriff Tom Hodgson was outraged that Kosilek would receive such treatment. "This is a killer who wants to be a girl, a man who murdered his wife, who has access to better health care than citizens who are paying for his incarceration," Hodgson told MyFoxBoston.com. The Massachusetts' Department of Corrections declined to comment on Kosilek's treatment, but it released a statement to MyFoxBoston.com, saying: "The DOC's responsibility is care and custody of inmates, including health care. Clinical indications for mammograms are not gender specific. If a mammogram is recommended by a physician for a male inmate, one would be provided where medically appropriate, as determined by the DOC's medical service provider."
