A formal reception marking the 30th anniversary of a commitment that made national headlines will be Saturday at St. Cloud State University.

“Karen Thompson & Sharon Kowalski: 30 Years of Courage, Commitment and Change” is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Atwood Memorial Center’s Cascade Room. A program will begin at 7:30.
The celebration acknowledges the commitment Thompson and Kowalski made to each other in 1979, before a drunken driver struck Kowalski and left her with a traumatic brain injury.
Thompson spent more than nine years fighting to bring her partner home after Kowalski’s father assumed guardianship of his daughter and refused to acknowledge Thompson as an important figure in Kowalski’s life.
The case gained national attention as supporters of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights stood with women’s rights and disability rights groups to fight for Kowalski’s reunion with Thompson.
In 1993, Kowalski returned home with Thompson.....
