Disculpame hijo mió y entiende mi coraje

Estoy muy ofendido, te digo la verdad

Porque de donde vengo los hombres son muy hombres,

Y tu me estas diciendo que eres homosexual…

Reaction of a Father: A Song About a Father’s Love for his Gay Son

Forgive me son and understand my anger

I’m offended and I’ll tell you the truth

Where I’m from, men are real men

And now you’re telling me that you are gay…

That’s the beginning of the song titled “Reacción de un padre/Reaction of a father” from the Mexican regional music band, Grupo Perverso. The leader and composer of the group Tino Silva brought the song, from their most recent production, to our attention. A song that narrates the experience of a father who just found out his son is gay. This is a unique song, especially in this genre. Grupo Perverso gained national attention with their song titled “La Marcha/The March” which addressed the struggles of millions of immigrants searching for the American dream.

God, why are we so hard headed?

Why don’t we look at each other without prejudice?

Where race, sex and religions don’t matter

Where everyone can live their lives, in peace.

The reaction of this father, by the end, is positive. He realizes that the love for his son is unconditional and that sexual orientation is irrelevant. Tino Silva was inspired by people in his personal life who had to deal with this same situation. He wanted to write a song for all the parents out there who are going through the same thing. “I don’t see a reason for discrimination. We should live our life just like any other person. There is no difference. Just like the song states, the love for a child is first. The love for a child should be unconditional. One’s child is the most important thing of all. You have to find a way to support your children,” said Silva.

Grupo Perverso is opening doors in Mexican regional music and Latino music in general to touch themes of the LGBT community with honesty, respect and objectivity. Songs like this make us smile wholeheartedly.
